Halfway reflections

Being (almost) half way through our trip to the northernmost tip of Australia and with another day at leisure on our hands, it is time to reflect on what we have seen and experienced. We have pulled together a list of questions and provided our responses below.

1. Favourite campsite – W: Chilli Beach, L: Eliot & Twin Falls , C: Hann Crossing in Lakefield NP.

2. Best beach – W: Chilli Beach, L: Elim Beach, C: Chilli Beach.

3. Most memorable quote – a unanimous decision – “Don’t f… with me or I’ll do ya”, as overheard from one seriously overweight bogan to his partner as they were packing up.

4. Favourite place to swim – another unanimous decision – The Saucepan.

5. Quietest campsite – Hann Crossing campground, Lakefield NP.

6. Best camp meal – W: paella, L: Keralan fish curry with fresh Spanish Mackerel, C: paella.

7. Most memorable person – W: Sharee who ran the Portland Roads Café and spoke about the cuscus that lived in her mango trees, L: manageress at Bloomfield Beach Camp who announced it was “Snitty Night”, C: two pig shooters we spoke to near the Portland Roads boat ramp.

8. Favourite walk -W: Murray Falls, L: Daintree boardwalks, C: Chilli Beach estuary.

9. Best meal out – unanimous- seafood platter plus dessert at Portland Roads Café.

10. Most memorable wildlife – W: Musky Rat-Kangaroo on the Bloomfield Track, L: crocodiles in the Ayton River, C: Sleepy shark at the Portland Roads boat ramp.

11. Most memorable experience – W: buying fresh, locally caught seafood near Chilli Beach, L: finding pitcher plants lining the banks of Eliot Creek, C: heading off at the start of the trip.
