During our adventure we have noted a number of pointless professions. We have decided it is time to share these observations with anyone considering a career change.
- Timber cutter at William Creek – there are no trees within 100 kilometres
- Shoe repairer in an indigenous community – only a small percentage of people wear footwear and thongs are the strong preference for those that do
- Dentist in far north Queensland – bad teeth seem to be fashionable north of Port Douglas
- Sheep shearer in the Northern Territory – there are no sheep, only cattle, in the NT
- Any job in hospitality in remote areas – because they are filled by overseas backpackers looking to extend their visas
- Open water swimming coach in the tropics – stingers, sharks and crocs mean there is little demand
- Grader driver on Cape York – there’s little evidence there are any graders on Cape York
- Speed camera operator on the Savannah Way west of Borroloola – the track is so bad you can’t exceed the speed limit
- Librarian north of Cairns – who needs a library when there are book exchanges in campgrounds, service stations, CWA outlets, etc
- Landscape gardener in Maree – it’s the start of the Birdsville Track & nothing grows there.
