Another beautiful sunny day greeted us on our first full day in Weipa. It was a change knowing that we didn’t have to pack up and move on, although any notion of sleeping in was strongly discouraged by the dawn cacophony made by the local birds!
We are camped overlooking the Gulf of Carpentaria in the Weipa Caravan & Camping ground which is located within walking distance from the centre of town. About 50% of the guests packed up and moved on this morning giving us the ritual entertainment of watching fellow travellers pack too much into too little before heading off. Seems like Weipa is a standard stop over from people travelling the Cape.
We spoke to a group of people heading north to the tip – they had travelled as a group from Mt Gambier in the very south of South Australia to Weipa in four days – a very long way in such a short amount of time. Some in their group were suggesting it wasn’t much of a holiday! It’s easy to feel some sympathy for their plight with no chance to stop and soak up the scenery.
Will hit the shops and stock up today – may even chance a haircut – there’s time for a disaster to grow out before getting home! Mine tour is booked for 8.30am tomorrow and (well travelled) curries are on the menu for dinner tonight!
