Mossman Gorge

A unique local pastime

While strolling along the main shopping strip in Port Douglas today we spotted a sign promoting cane toad races that were on every night at 8.00pm. We’re not sure if cane toad racing is a widespread pastime up here or something unique to the pub.

Maybe it’s an indication there is little else to do here.

After visiting the farmer’s market in Port Douglas this morning and grabbing a decent coffee in town, we returned to our campsite to relocate from our unpowered site to a powered site with ensuite for the next two nights – what luxury! Caught up with Glen & Claire as we swapped camp sites. After setting up and a bite to eat for lunch we headed to Mossman Gorge for a walk and an explore. While cool under the rainforest canopy, the humidity remained high. Took a number of photos that we will upload to the internet over the next day or two.

After the walk we headed back to Port Douglas to catch up with Glen & Claire for drinks at the Combined Services Club on the water overlooking another awesome sunset. The ranges fringing Port Douglas and stretching up to the Daintree are quite distinct – tall peaks rising out of the fertile coastal plains that hug the coastline – most assigned to the growing of sugar cane.

We have one more day in Port Douglas before taking on the challenges of the Bloomfield Track between the Daintree and Cooktown.
