Arrived at Hideaway Bay in the Whitsundays yesterday afternoon – on yet another clear, sunny and warm day. After setting up our campsite (something we are getting very proficient at now) we continued along the road that hugs the coast until the tarmac gave way to gravel. We headed to an ‘eco’ resort to sample their cool beverages and enjoy their west facing aspect as the sun set on another great day. Their seafood platter topped things off – sleeping soundly was not an issue last night.
Today we woke to a cool (the locals called it cold), sunny morning. After breakfast we bid farewell to Glen who was heading to Cairns to get his backup batteries checked over before we head up Cape York – we planned to meet up again at Port Douglas. From our campsite, we took a path that led down to the local beach to check out the lay of the land. We’re close to one of possibly hundreds of sheltered beaches in this region – sandy beach, crystal clear blue/green water sheltered by rocky headlands and off shore islands.
After exploring our local beach we jumped in the Prado and headed over to Dingo Beach – the next main beach south east of our campsite. A sleepy place with a pub / general store / service station all rolled into one ramshackle building whose architectural heritage was well disguised.
We found a shaded picnic area that had boardwalk access to the local beach. After a quick inspection of the beach and sheltered bay, decided a paddle in the kayak was in order. The Whitsunday waters were much warmer than those down at 1770 where we last launched the kayak. The ocean was also very clear with outcrops of coral visible beneath the kayak.
It’s now time to turn our attention to pressing matters such as what we might have for dinner!
PS. Not sure when this will get posted to the web – we’re in a communication black hole – the first experienced since leaving Melbourne.
