Woke to another clear sunny day with plans to increase our geocaching “finds” by seeking out a number of caches spread along the length of Teewah Beach up to Double Island point and then on the return journey from Rainbow Beach.
Wendy downloaded details for a number of caches, the first being hidden where we needed to queue for the car ferry that took us across the Noosa River to the North Shore. The first cache was hidden somewhere near the mouth of the Noosa River opposite Hastings Street. We walked towards the mouth of the river from where the 4WD track enters the beach and after some searching back and forth, found the walking track that lead us to the cache in a stand of tea-tree.
We headed north up Teewah Beach and stopped at the next cache located at the top of the coastal dunes. Have to thank the person who placed the cache for giving us a chance to waste lots of time and heaps of energy trying to get to the top of that sand dune! Gave up in the end as it was something that required the talents of Bear Grylls to overcome the odds.
After recovering from the sand dune challenge we continued north to Double Island Point, named by Captain Cook as he sailed by almost 250 years ago. The walk to the lighthouse offers great views south back down Teewah Beach and also north to the east coast of Fraser Island. The walk also provided sweeping views east over the Pacific where a number of yachts were headed north, possibly for the Hamilton Island regatta. We were also lucky enough to spot one and possibly two whales heading to Harvey Bay.
The next leg of our journey took us back down the beach to the start of the Freshwater Track over the dunes and through a mix of coastal rainforest and heavily timbered forest. We parked and made our way to a fresh water lake that had been dry for years, just off the 4WD track. Our timing was right and after the heavy rains earlier in the year, we found the lake to be full and providing a home for a number of ducks. While the clue for the cache we were looking for was vague, we eventually found it. Our journey continued on to Rainbow Beach and our next cache challenge located near an inland waterway at the bottom of Harvey Bay. This time we were after a micro cache – apparently the smallest previous visitors had found! We came up trumps, again and enjoyed the view across the sand flats towards Tin Can Bay.
